Sea Life Brighton is celebrating the arrival of a new baby California Horn Shark, the first creature of its kind to be born at the aquarium.

The as yet unnamed baby is thought to be a female, but is still too young and too small to be categorised for certain – currently measuring just 14 centimetres.

The shark’s proud parents have been housed at Sea Life Brighton for over three years, and have taken their time to expand the family. However, this youngster was worth the wait.

She will now be registered with the European stud book, which means that she will help to maintain the overall population of California Horn Sharks in European aquariums when she is older, as part of Sea Life’s Breed, Rescue, Protect programme.

Kerry Perkins, Aquarist at Sea Life Brighton commented: “We are thrilled to welcome this new addition to Sea Life Brighton.

“Horn Sharks can grow to be as big as 1.2 metres, so this little one has got a long way to go to catch her parents up. We look forward to seeing her grow and will be charting her development during her time at Sea Life Brighton. I’m sure our visitors will enjoy being able to watch such a fascinating creature mature when she is on display in the Behind the Scenes tour.”

In the run up to Easter (10-17 April), Sea Life Brighton will be hosting a series of giveaways on its Facebook page. Prizes include VIP feeding experiences at the aquarium, a family meal at Donatello’s, a Sea Life Annual Pass and wine tasting for two at Ridgeview. The week’s main prize will be the opportunity to name the new baby California Horn Shark. To take part, visit Facebook : Sealife Brighton.

Sea Life Brighton is open from 10am every day apart from Christmas Day. Visitors can save more than 40% by booking in advance online. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit Visit Sealife : Brighton.
