From slick spies to Jedi Masters, it’s the season of heroes in cinemas this autumn. With highlights including Blade Runner 2049 and Justice League, you’re spoiled for choice – and many of these will demand a second viewing. Here’s our pick of the most exciting movies of the season.

Blade Runner 2049

Set 30 years after the original Blade Runner film, this follow-up to the iconic sci-fi stars Ryan Gosling as a futuristic cop who hunts down his predecessor, Deckard, who of course is played by original Blade Runner star Harrison Ford. With Jared Leto on bad guy duty and a host of talents in front of and behind the camera – including Arrival director Denis Villeneuve – this is a must-see movie that will get you talking. Whether you saw the original or are coming to the series fresh, this is a cinematic event you will not want to miss.

Lego Ninjago Movie

Get your ninja moves ready for the next movie in the brilliant Lego series. This one tells the story of a young high school hero who must be trained up so that he can fight his evil father… Sound familiar? As ever the Lego gang give a nod and a wink to classic movies while bringing bags of fresh fun to the table. The starry voice cast includes Jackie Chan and Dave Franco. This is one parents will be volunteering for.

Thor Ragnarok

Chris Hemsworth is back with a bang as one of our favourite superheroes, the mighty Thor. This sees him go head to head with his old mate the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and finds an unlikely ally in his naughty brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston). We’re especially looking forward to seeing Cate Blanchett as the glamorous villain Hela, who’s sure to make the most of every screen moment she gets. And with Taika Waititi (Hunt For The Wilderpeople) on directing duty, you know this is going to have plenty of laugh out loud moments.

Murder on the Orient Express

As if a new Agatha Christie movie wasn’t excuse enough to hit the cinema, how about this: Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench.. this has one heck of a starry cast. Kenneth Branagh directs and also stars as detective Hercule Poirot – and that has got to be worth seeing. If you don’t know the story, it’s an everyone-is-a-suspect job aboard a glamorous train trip through Europe. Fabulous.

Paddington 2

The loveable bear is coming back and we can’t wait to see him! Paddington is still in his beloved London, living with the Browns (Sally Hawkins and Hugh Bonneville), but when he’s wrongly accused he ends up in prison. But we reckon prison will be a lot more fun when Paddington gets there – and there’s also a hilarious new character, vain celebrity Phoenix Buchanan, played by none other than Hugh Grant. Go with the family, then why not go again for another giggle? Those gags just keep on giving.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Another compulsory family outing, the latest in the Star Wars saga will be the highlight of the Christmas season – and it’s sure to have plenty of details to thrill fans. Mark Hamill returns as Luke Skywalker, the jaded hero who will surely be persuaded back into action by heroic young scavenger Rey (Daisy Ridley). Won’t he? Find out in the action-packed follow up to The Force Awakens. We are counting down the days.
